Education and knowledge are terms that are often interpreted differently, both in everyday life and in science. We draw on a concept inspired by Peter Bieri, in which education and knowledge are fundamentally differentiated. This makes it clear why coaching and seminars should ideally focus on education rather than just knowledge.

1st order knowledge:

This is specialist and factual knowledge that can be acquired quickly and without in-depth self-reflection. It comprises the technical skills required to solve specific tasks and problems. First-order knowledge is often conveyed through books or lessons, but does not constitute education.

2nd order knowledge:

This knowledge is application-oriented and includes methodological competence. It refers to the ability to choose suitable methods for solving problems and requires self-reflection at an early stage. Second-order knowledge can be seen as a transition to education.

3rd order knowledge:

Here we are talking about meaningful knowledge that is linked to self-competence. It requires the ability for reflective self-organization, the cultivation of productive attitudes and values. Third-order knowledge arises through self-reflection and time and is what we call genuine education. Self-competence necessarily includes social competence.

Education always requires a critical examination of oneself, regardless of age. It is about taking the time for self-reflection and having the will to change.

Philosophy is a catalyst for critical self-reflection, which is closely linked to our concept of education. Our focus is on wonder and curiosity - asking questions that go beyond the obvious. We are not interested in first-order questions of knowledge, such as “What is a share?” or “How does a certain technology work?”, but in third-order questions: the “why”.

The art of critical thinking:

These profound questions can be investigated with a “why” that includes the search for reasons and arguments. Critical thinking means not being satisfied with simple answers or slogans, but questioning the real reasons and seeking true knowledge. This also includes the reasons for our actions: There are reasons and justifications for every behavior.

Appreciation in thought and action:

Of particular relevance is whether these reasons correspond to an appreciative attitude. In everyday business life, the interpersonal, appreciative part can easily fade into the background if transactions are reduced to the neutral framework of a business. We often forget that there is a person behind every function and activity.
